Cloth Diapering 101

» Back to Caring for Baby Tips & Advice

The cloth diapering trend continues to rise as companies flood the market with various diapering systems and parents clamor for a greater selection of natural diapering choices.

Although cloth diapers have increased in popularity and use, parents-to-be are still often confused by the cloth diapering system as well as concerned about the potential of extra work for laundering cloth diapers.

Most babies go through 10–15 diapers per day so many parents will have 40–50 cloth diapers on hand to use in rotation.

Washable liners are a must when using cloth diapers. They help prevent stains and give added protection from leaks. Many parents use these liners only for bedtime, although other parents prefer to have extra protection 24-hours a day.

A few diaper covers are also necessary for proper cloth diapering. Diaper covers are placed over the diaper to keep it snug on the baby, which assists in keeping the baby dry. Because diapers and diaper covers are made out of natural material, it is breathable. That means it is less likely that an infection can occur (such as diaper rash).

This inventory of 40 diapers plus a few liners and covers will last approximately two to three days.

BabyBestBuy has taken the guesswork out of developing your own diapering system with our Diaper Bundles. Each bundle provides everything you need to get started with a cloth diapering system.

Cloth Diapering: Laundry and Care
Used cloth diapers can be tossed directly into the washing machine for laundering, although most parents implement some form of soaking prior to laundering. Soaking soiled diapers helps to disinfect them and allows parents to laundry diapers in full loads every few days.

There are several options for soaking soiled diapers. They can be plunged in the toilet for a quick rinse or a tool such as The Diaper Duck allows the soaking to occur right in the toilet, for a hands-free rinse. This brings convenience to the parent and less clean up.

Some parents opt for a diaper laundry service, which provides fresh diapers once a week or more.
