The Downside of Disposable Diapers

» Back to Caring for Baby Tips & Advice

Disposable diapers are no longer the only diapering option for busy parents. Cloth diapers of today have improved so dramatically that they now rival disposable diapers in terms of their convenience and leakage control. Some parents may assume that their diapering choice is merely one of preference; however, many parents are making the switch to cloth after learning the ins-and-outs of the disposable diaper.

You see, the main ingredient in a disposable diaper is sodium polyacrylate, which helps turn the liquid into gel. This is the agent that prevents leakage. But due to this synthetic material, many illnesses—such as urinary track infections and toxic shock syndrome—can occur due to the heat that is contained within the diaper’s gel core. Another side affect of the heat is diaper rash, which can become a very serious problem for both mother and baby.

Due to these health concerns caused by disposable diaper usage, many loving parents have decided to go cloth: the breathable, natural diapering choice.
